À PROPOS / ABOUT

EN | Nathalie Chapdelaine is a visual artist who lives and works between Montréal and Val-David. Her image-based practice, primarily photographic, unfolds around a poetic approach to the forest, seen as a territory of exploration that resonates with her own human condition. Intuitively, she turns her lens toward the living world, toward light and shadow, which become material in relation to the phenomena that surround her. She holds a DEC in Photography from Dawson College and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Photography at Concordia University. Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at the gallery of Mon Atelier de Quartier (Montréal) and at the Bibliothèque de l’Île (Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs).

EN | My photographic practice is rooted in the act of walking, understood as a space of contemplation and of connection to the world. Through the forest, I bring to light a mystical, ethereal presence. Guided by my steps, by backlight and shifting atmospheres, I rest my gaze on fleeting moments held in suspension, where the image becomes a place of wonder, of slowness, of listening. Beyond this sensory quest, my photographs also question the political dimensions of the land, attending to the fragility of ecosystems and to the traces of their alteration. Post-production becomes a deliberate ritual, one that takes part in the transformation of the subject and brings back to the surface the paradox of our bond with the earth: a profound admiration coexists with the sorrow of its destruction.

In questioning the rupture of the sensory bond between the human and the natural world, my aim is to give rise to a desire to protect. My work is an invitation to contemplate, whether through the pages of a book or through prints that ask for a moment of pause. In constant search of the sublime, I seek in the image a sense of appeasement, and a tangible connection with the living world.
